Dear Christians: Now Would Be A Good Time To Come To Your Senses

“North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. He has been very threatening, beyond a normal state… They will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before.” ~ Donald Trump

These are the words of one unstable megalomaniac to another. Trump’s words were not chosen at random… He meant them to be specifically referring to our country’s use of nuclear weapons. His words closely mirrored President Harry Truman’s words while addressing the country about the use of nuclear weapons against Japan, when he said Japan “may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth. Just three hours after Trump made his threat, Kim Jong Un (the unstable man-child in charge of North Korea) made a statement through state media that they were “seriously reviewing” plans for a military strike against Guam–Not only the site of strategic U.S. military bases, but also U.S. soil.

Trump is a man who was put in power by people calling themselves “christians.” A man who met with a foreign policy advisor and asked three times — THREE TIMES!! — why he couldn’t use nuclear bombs. “If we have them, why can’t we use them?” he asked… Three times in a one hour briefing. This is a man who has surrounded himself with apocalyptic “christians,” like “pastor” Robert Jeffress, who–after Trump’s “fire and fury” comments–commended the president’s resoluteness, and said“In the case of North Korea, God has given Trump authority to take out Kim Jong Un.” A man who was already talking in 1999 about a pre-emptive strike against North Korea (after, he said, he’d “negotiate like crazy”). And this is a man who–in just over 200 days, has brought us to the brink of war with an unstable nuclear power, who also happens to be an ally of China.

This is not–I repeat–NOT how to love our enemies.

So NOW is the time when the Christians who supported Donald Trump need to wake up. I know that there are some out there who are never going to change their support for this evil and dangerously broken man. It makes sense why a certain brand of “christian” would support Donald Trump. For many Trump-supporting “christians,” the god they worship is the god of “fire and fury.” The god who’s going to use this evil king to bring about judgment and wrath. These people are not in the business of SAVING the world–They are in the business of ESCAPING the world… A world (they have been told for the last 14 centuries, or so) will be consumed by fire very soon. Some are beyond the scope of reason… But not all of you are like this.

Many of you have been questioning your support more and more every day. With every day, there is another national embarrassment, and another reason for regret. Maybe some of you DON’T regret your decision. Maybe you STILL argue that he was the “lesser of two evils” between him and Hillary… Maybe her eMails were a big enough issue that you thought he was the better option… Maybe you got caught up in all the “Drain The Swamp” talk… FINE! But Hillary is no longer an issue. Now the issue is that we have a demented narcissist in the Oval Office, and he has the nuclear codes. If you stay silent right now, it is very possible that A LOT of people are going to die. If you call yourself “Pro-Life,” it’s time to act like it. The atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima killed over 140,000 people. The bomb dropped on Nagasaki three days later killed more than 70,000 people. Over the years, the radiation killed many, many more. And the bombs dropped on Japan are dwarfed in destructive power by the bombs we currently have. A strike against North Korea–even a non-nuclear strike–would devastate the Asian peninsula just from the fallout of the reactors that are currently there. We must also remember that when the atomic bombs of WWII were dropped, we were the only nation on the planet who had them. THAT IS NO LONGER THE CASE.

COME TO YOUR SENSES, CHURCH–NOW IS THE TIME TO WAKE UP, AND NOW IS THE TIME TO SPEAK UP. Call your senator. Call your representative. Flood the phone lines. We have a voice. We have political power. And that’s the reason WE–the citizens of United States of America–need to be the ones to pressure our government AWAY from war and destruction and fallout, and TOWARD diplomacy and sanity and peace. The people of North Korea don’t have a voice. They are oppressed and lied to and kept from anything that might inform them of the truth. Speaking out against the leadership in North Korea is a capital offense. The slightest misstep can land you in forced labor camps. Dissent will literally get you killed. But that is NOT the case in our nation… A nation–for all its problems–that I still love and appreciate, and a nation that I don’t want to see start a nuclear war. If you are a person who calls yourself a Christian–a follower of a man named Jesus, who commanded us to LOVE our enemies instead of killing them–NOW is the time to speak up in opposition to this woefully unqualified, demented, disastrous, broken man. You put him in power… We are going to need your help to get him out.

If you’re like me, you are tired of feeling like hopefulness doesn’t make sense. I re-read THIS POST today, and it made me feel a bit better. Stay hopeful, stay engaged, and active. And if you value this blog, and you want to help support it, you can BECOME A PATRON. Or you can LEAVE A TIP if you want to boost a post. Otherwise, it means a lot just to share the ones you like. Share this one with a Christian you know who think is suspecting that Jesus and Trump don’t mix… Also, you can keep up with me on Facebook and on Twitter. We are not alone!

  1. I appreciate you for the content of this blog.

  3. When I was a child and frightened to death during the Cuban Missile Crisis, my Fundamentalist father assured me that at the sound of a trumpet, Jesus would come back and rapture all of the Christians before the bombs went off. From that point on, every time I heard a siren I figured that Christ had taken all of the Christians and left me to die a fiery death. I “got saved” at least a hundred times during that period.

A certain joy was present in my father’s eyes during this period. He said that God’s enemies were going to get what was coming to them. This is when I realized that what I had been taught to believe was not necessarily the truth.

Not just sad. Terrifying! This self absorbed, narcissistic, insecure man-child is going to cause the death of many innocent people if he isn’t stopped. And way too many “Christians” think the way James’ dad thinks. What in the world has happened to this country??

    • Jollygreen says:

I don’t know what makes me sadder… the theat of a nuclear conflict or your own story

    • Phyllis b says:

Salvation is a once for all event. Fear not be assured the end is near. Have you read the Father’s document yet? North Korea is not in chargevof tje world and neither is usa. Get ready, get real and get informed.

  4. Wonderfully written! Thank you for speaking directly toward the evangelicals who gave this maniac power. Their warped view of God and Christianity is finally being exposed. I hope it does not take human lives being lost for them to see the error in their ways.

  5. Melanie Lee says:

As a Christian who didn’t support Trump, I appreciate your message. Jesus did say, in speaking of the end times, “For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24). In the case of Donald Trump, I think the “elect” wanted to be deceived! Some Christians may glory in the idea of God using Donald Trump to bring about the end of the world. See if these words of Jesus apply here:

“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!” –Matthew 18:6-7

    • Melanie Lee says:

Oh, and this would be a good time for Christians of all ilks–and for anyone who believes in God–to repent, fast, and pray. Specifically, it would be a good time for any Christian who supported Trump to rethink their choice and to wonder, “What was I thinking?”

  6. Jollygreen says:

Lots of fear and pathos. Here are two reactions.
    1. Hillary’s email scandal was not why she was the worse option…
    2. You built your whole argument on semantic parallels between Trum(an) and Trum(p)? I’m willing to bet the US will use only conventional weapons and will spare the reactors.
    3. Hitler also used rhetoric and fear. We decided to engage this mad man and I’m ready to bet again that you are not sorry we did. I’m still waiting to see how to engage this type of dysfonctional leader… with love. I’m not saying you are wrong, I’m waiting to be taught.

    • Melanie Lee says:

One difference: I’m hoping that Truman was reluctant to use nuclear weaponry against Japan…and since it hadn’t done before, we didn’t know the full effects of it. Trump seems eager, or at least not too reluctant, to get us into nuclear war, and we know now what that can do.

  7. mikey says:

I do wonder what you would have said in 1942. I guess we would all be kowtowing to a Japanese or German master and thanking Jesus that we were spared all that violence.

    • Tom says:

Did you even READ the blog before this post. It clearly delineates the differences between these two cases. This IS NOT 1942!

  8. philip cartlidge says:

Trump is doing the correct thing, standing up to a bully – that’s the only way a bully will listen/ all you Pc’s out there are not helping.

    • theboeskool says:

      You are a cliché, Philip.

“Standing up to a bully” is one things… “Publicly escalating an unstable, irrational bully (who has a gun in his pocket, and could very well use it to injure/kill someone other than you) with an enraging war of words” is something totally different. Trump’s diplomatic incontinence might very well be beyond his control… But it is not beyond the control of all of us who are watching him collapse the possibility for a diplomatic solution.

Long story short, you are totally wrong. And labeling everything who understands your wrongness as a “PC” is part of what makes you so epically wrong. I don’t know you, but something tells me you wouldn’t know the “correct” thing if it knocked your MAGA hat off your whiter than white head.

(I’m just guessing on the “Whiter than white” thing… Am I correct?)

      • Mark says:

So you want Trump to stand up to the bully, who is holding his slaves hostage in N Korea, by going to the UN and begging for them to send the dictator some more money. That is diplomacy to you? Let’s keep Kim and his family business going. What a great deal, I threaten the world continuously and they keep backing down and sending me and my slaves money so I can continue keeping the slaves. Problem is, Trump does not own mom jeans. You win the argument with a bully by standing up to the bully, not giving in to his demands. When the rest of the world and the USA stop doing business with and stop selling arms to NK the madness will stop. I don’t advocate for Nukes, and I don’t advocate for beating up my neighbor for his stupidity, but … I got my black belt for a reason… to be prepared to protect myself or those around me who need protection. You take the first swing, I will always let you have that, I will bob and weave and avoid a few swings, but at some point your going down. Trump is not the bully, he’s not the bad guy here, he is the one standing up to the bully.

  9. Emmons hay says:

Trump rules! I hope he drops bombs on North Korea . We have had enough talking . God bless the USA .

    • theboeskool says:

Isn’t it weird that the non-religious people understand how gross and immoral a statement like this is, but you probably call yourself a “christian” and don’t see ti at all…

      • Mark says:

Isn’t is weird how the anti religious people are fine with war when the Clintion’s and the Obama’s do war, either to start or continue, but not when a man stands up to a bully.

  10. joesantus says:

    BOESKOO,
You wrote, ” COME TO YOUR SENSES, CHURCH–NOW IS THE TIME TO WAKE UP, AND NOW IS THE TIME TO SPEAK UP. Call your senator. Call your representative. Flood the phone lines. We have a voice. We have political power.”

Is using your brand of theological interpretations to promote your political/social opinions any less of a manipulative, play-upon-readers’-emotions-through-their-supernatural-beliefs tactic than when people of contrary theological interpretations, (including Trump-endorsers) use theirs to promote their own?
